Recap: 2023 Hall of Honor events

A very special day last Friday in Aggieland, where the FJSA inducted three new members into the Hall of Honor, hosted a panel for journalism students and staffers of The Battalion, and provided speakers to journalism classes.

The Hall of Honor reception brought together friends and supporters of journalism education at Texas A&M, as we celebrated Kathryn Greenwade ‘88, Loren Steffy ‘86 and John P. Lopez ‘84. The words shared — from both the awardees and the friends who presented the plaques — were moving, inspiring and funny at turns.

The event included an update on the journalism program by Dr. Hart Blanton, head of the Department of Communication & Journalism.

In addition to the Hall of Honor, FJSA also hosted a panel with current students, moderated by Matthew Watkins ‘07. Lopez and Steffy recounted stories of their time working at The Battalion (Suing the administration! Trying to concentrate while Lyle Lovett was plucking on his instrument!), and tied it how invaluable the experience to their careers.

And that wasn’t all. FJSA paired professional journalists to speak at journalism classes. Special thanks to Ken Sury ‘86 and to Flora Charner of CNN, for volunteering your time to share your experiences with students!
